Anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are two of the most popular aesthetic treatments in the UK — and two of the most commonly confused. Both are non-surgical, both are minimally invasive, and both can produce subtle, natural-looking results. But they work in very different ways, and they are right for very different concerns.
What anti-wrinkle injections do
Anti-wrinkle injections temporarily relax the small muscles in your face that cause dynamic lines — the lines that appear when you frown, smile, or raise your eyebrows. By gently softening muscle activity in carefully chosen areas, the treatment reduces the appearance of frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet while preserving natural expression. What dermal fillers do
Dermal fillers, by contrast, restore lost volume and refine facial contours. They use a hyaluronic-acid-based gel to replenish areas where age, weight change, or natural anatomy has reduced fullness — cheeks, lips, the jawline, or nasolabial folds. Filler does not relax muscle; it restores structure. Read more about dermal fillers.
How to think about the difference
A simple rule of thumb: anti-wrinkle injections address lines that appear when you move your face. Dermal fillers address lines, hollows, or loss of definition that are visible when your face is at rest. The two treatments are often combined — not because every patient needs both, but because a thoughtful plan will use the right tool for each concern.
Which is right for you?
The honest answer: it depends on what you are seeing, what you are hoping to achieve, and the underlying structure of your face. This is why we always begin with a personalised consultation. Both treatments are absolutely safe in skilled hands, with minimal downtime, and both can be carefully adjusted (dermal fillers can even be dissolved if needed). The most important thing is that the recommendation comes from a clinician who has assessed your face in person.
