Crowns

Restore the strength of a single tooth

A weakened, broken, or root-treated tooth often needs more than a filling. A dental crown acts like a bespoke cap — custom-made to fit over the entire visible part of the tooth, restoring its strength, shape, and natural appearance. At Cardiff Dental and Aesthetics Centre, crowns are crafted to match your surrounding teeth so they blend quietly into your smile.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made restoration that fits over the entire visible part of a tooth, restoring its strength, shape, and appearance. Crowns are often used when a tooth has been weakened by decay, fracture, or root canal treatment. Modern crowns are made from strong, high-quality materials such as porcelain or ceramic — durable, natural-looking, and built to last.

Why choose a dental crown?

Crowns are a reliable way to restore and protect teeth that might otherwise require extraction.

  • Strengthen weak or damaged teeth — Crowns reinforce compromised teeth, letting you bite and chew with confidence.

  • Protect after root canal treatment — Root-treated teeth become brittle — a crown safeguards them for the long term.

  • Improve appearance — Discoloured, misshapen, or damaged teeth are restored to a natural shape and shade.

  • Replace older NHS metal crowns — Swap dated silver or metal crowns for modern tooth-coloured ones that look and feel natural.

Your journey to a stronger smile

Most crowns take two visits. Here’s the journey:

  • 1

Consultation and assessment — The dentist examines your tooth, discusses the best option, and may take X-rays to check the tooth structure and supporting bone.

  • 2

Tooth preparation — The tooth is carefully shaped so the crown fits securely. We take an impression or digital scan to create a crown that matches your smile.

  • 3

Temporary crown — While your custom crown is being made, a temporary one protects your tooth and keeps it looking and feeling natural.

  • 4

Final crown placement — Your custom crown is securely fitted and adjusted to make sure it feels comfortable and bites naturally.

Frequently asked questions about Crowns

How long do dental crowns last?

With proper care, modern crowns typically last 10–15 years or longer. Regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental checkups help maximise their lifespan.

Will a crown look like a natural tooth?

Yes. Today’s porcelain and ceramic crowns are custom-shaded and shaped to match your surrounding teeth. Most people — including you — won’t be able to tell the difference.

What’s the difference between porcelain and metal crowns?

Porcelain crowns match the natural colour of teeth and are ideal for visible areas. Metal crowns (silver or gold) are stronger but more noticeable, which is why most modern crowns use tooth-coloured materials for a natural-looking result.

How many visits are needed for a crown?

Typically two visits: the first to prepare the tooth and take impressions, the second to fit the final crown. A temporary crown protects your tooth between visits.
