Hygiene Visits

Cleaner teeth, healthier gums, fresher breath

A hygiene appointment is an essential part of maintaining a healthy mouth and a confident smile. At Cardiff Dental and Aesthetics Centre, we use the EMS Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) system — an advanced and modern approach to dental hygiene that is gentle, precise, and highly effective.

Patient Results

What is a hygiene appointment?

During your visit, our dental hygiene team focuses on preventing and treating common oral health problems such as plaque build-up, tartar (calculus), staining, and gum disease.

At Cardiff Dental and Aesthetics Centre, we use the EMS Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) system — an advanced and modern approach to dental hygiene. This technology allows us to remove harmful biofilm (plaque), stains, and early tartar in a gentle, precise, and comfortable way.

The EMS GBT system uses a combination of warm water, fine powder, and air polishing technology to clean teeth and gums thoroughly while being kinder to your teeth and soft tissues than traditional methods.

Why choose a hygiene appointment?

Regular hygiene appointments play a vital role in keeping your mouth healthy and preventing more serious dental problems.

  • Professional removal of plaque and tartar — Regular cleaning removes the build-up that daily brushing cannot reach, keeping teeth and gums healthy between visits.

  • Stain removal for a fresher, brighter smile — Professional cleaning lifts surface stains from tea, coffee, and everyday foods, leaving your smile noticeably cleaner.

  • Prevention and management of gum disease — Early intervention against gum inflammation protects your gums and the bone structure that supports your teeth.

  • Fresher breath and improved oral health — Removing harmful bacteria from hard-to-clean areas reduces bad breath and lowers your risk of tooth decay.

  • Gentle and comfortable cleaning with the EMS GBT system — Our advanced technology is kinder to your teeth and soft tissues than traditional cleaning methods.

Your hygiene visit, step by step

Here is what to expect at your hygiene visit. Every appointment follows the same four-stage approach, each stage tailored to what your teeth and gums need. Using EMS Guided Biofilm Therapy, the process is gentler and more precise than traditional methods.

We use EMS Guided Biofilm Therapy

Because we use the EMS Guided Biofilm Therapy system, your hygiene appointment is designed to be minimally invasive, highly effective, and more comfortable than traditional cleaning methods.

  • 1

Assessment — Your hygiene appointment begins with a careful examination of your teeth and gums. We check for signs of plaque, tartar, and gum inflammation so we can tailor the treatment to your needs.

  • 2

Biofilm Detection — A special disclosing solution may be used to highlight areas of plaque (biofilm). This helps us target the areas that need the most attention and allows you to see where improvements can be made with your brushing routine.

  • 3

Gentle Cleaning with EMS GBT — Using the EMS Guided Biofilm Therapy system, we gently remove plaque, stains, and tartar from your teeth and around the gum line using air polishing and precision instruments.

  • 4

Personalised Oral Care Advice — To help maintain your results, we provide tailored advice on brushing, flossing, and oral hygiene products that will support your long-term dental health.

Frequently asked questions about Hygiene Visits

How often should I visit the dental hygienist?

We recommend a hygiene visit every 3–6 months, depending on your individual oral health needs. Your dentist or hygienist will advise the most suitable frequency at your appointment — some patients benefit from more regular visits if they are managing gum disease or have a higher tendency to build up tartar.

What is EMS Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)?

GBT is an advanced, clinically proven dental hygiene system developed by EMS. It uses a combination of warm water, fine powder, and air-polishing technology to gently remove biofilm (plaque), stains, and early tartar from teeth, gums, and around dental restorations. It is more comfortable and precise than traditional scaling methods.

Does a hygiene appointment hurt?

GBT is specifically designed to be gentle and comfortable. Most patients find it significantly more pleasant than traditional cleaning methods. If you have sensitive teeth, gum sensitivity, or dental anxiety, please tell your hygienist before your appointment — we can adjust the treatment accordingly to keep you comfortable throughout.

Are hygiene visits safe during pregnancy?

Yes — hygiene visits are not only safe during pregnancy but actively recommended. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can make gum tissue more susceptible to inflammation, a condition sometimes called pregnancy gingivitis. Regular professional cleaning helps keep your gums healthy, which is important for both you and your baby. Please let us know you are pregnant when you book.
